Inches and centimeters chart

These charts use the same rule as the converter: one inch is exactly 2.54 centimeters, and one foot is 12 inches. Every value is rounded to 2 decimal places, with extra zeros at the end dropped.[1]

Worked example: a height of 170 cm

Turning 170 centimeters into inches[1]
Length and direction
170, centimeters to inches, 2 decimal places
Result
170 cm = 66.93 in
  • 170 divided by 2.54 is 66.929 and a bit more, which rounds to 66.93 inches.
  • Five whole feet use up 60 inches, and the 6.93 inches left over give 5 ft 6.93 in.

Method and limits

The inch is defined as exactly 2.54 centimeters. So the factor itself has no rounding in it, and any difference you see between this converter and another one comes only from how many decimal places each one shows.[1]

Results here are rounded to the number of places you choose, from 0 to 4. The feet and inches figure counts the whole feet from the exact value first, then rounds only the inches left over. If those inches round up to a full 12, they become one more foot.

A real measurement is only as exact as the ruler or tape you used. A tape marked in sixteenths of an inch, or in millimeters, limits how many decimal places are worth keeping.

How it works

  1. Pick which unit you are starting with: inches to centimeters, or centimeters to inches. Type the length in the box. It can be zero or any larger number up to 1,000,000, and decimals such as 5.5 are fine. Choose how many decimal places to show, from 0 to 4. The default is 2.
  2. The converter uses one rule: an inch is exactly 2.54 centimeters, as the Dictionary of Units hosted by ibiblio states. For inches to centimeters it multiplies your number by 2.54. For centimeters to inches it divides your number by 2.54.
  3. It also turns the length into feet and inches, using the same source: an inch is 1/12 of a foot, so a foot is 12 inches. It counts the whole feet first, then shows the inches left over. This is handy for heights.
  4. Each answer is rounded to the decimal places you picked, and extra zeros at the end are dropped, so 14.0 shows as 14. The result shows the converted length, the length in feet and inches, and the step used, such as 12 × 2.54 = 30.48.

Questions

How many centimeters are in an inch?

Exactly 2.54. The inch is defined as 2.54 centimeters, so this number is not rounded. To go from inches to centimeters, multiply by 2.54. To go from centimeters to inches, divide by 2.54.

How do I turn a height in centimeters into feet and inches?

Divide the centimeters by 2.54 to get inches. Then take out as many whole groups of 12 inches as you can; each one is a foot. What is left is the inches. For example, 170 cm is about 66.93 inches, which is 5 feet and 6.93 inches.

Why does another site show a slightly different number?

The factor of 2.54 is exact, so any difference comes only from rounding. Pick more decimal places here if you need a closer match. With 4 places, 100 cm shows as 39.3701 inches.

How exact is the result?

The math is exact up to the decimal places you pick. A real measurement is only as exact as the ruler or tape you used, so a tape read to the nearest quarter inch does not need four decimal places.

Can I convert large numbers or decimals?

Yes. You can type decimals such as 5.5, and any length from 0 up to 1,000,000. For anything bigger, use a smaller unit or split the number. Negative lengths are not accepted.

Is the converter free?

Yes. It is free to use, there is nothing to install, and the math runs in your browser as you type.

Do I have to give my email?

No. Your result shows right away without it. The email box below the result is optional, and you can use it if you want a copy sent to you.
